Discreet Music (1975) is the fourth studio album by the British musician Brian Eno. While his earlier work with Robert Fripp (No Pussyfooting) and several selections from Another Green World feature similar ideas, Discreet Music marked a clear step toward the ambient aesthetic Eno would later codify with 1978's Ambient 1: Music for Airports. It is also Eno's first album to be released under his full name "Brian Eno" as opposed to his previous rock albums released simply under the name "Eno".

The latter part of 1975 was a remarkably creative period for Brian Eno. With his masterpiece Another Green World, Eno began moving away from the structure and sound of pop music toward a more static instrumental model, influenced in part by Erik Satie and strongly informed by his prior collaborations with Robert Fripp. Recorded just a month after Another Green World, Discreet Music is his first full foray into what has become known as ambient music.

1975’s Discreet Music forms a bridge between the peaceful instrumental passages that Brian Eno featured on Another Green World and the full-blown ambient music that he'd introduce on a series of albums in the following years. The 30-minute title song isn't so much performed as manifested. The album's second half employs a similar tactic with a different outcome. Eno gave a small string ensemble (conducted by Gavin Bryars) brief excerpts of a piece by 17th-century composer Johann Pachelbel; the musicians were instructed to repeat the passages several times, gradually adding adjustments in tempo and timbre. Though Discreet Music borrows heavily from the practices of such revered avant-garde musicians as John Cage, Terry Riley, and Steve Reich, Eno’s music is neither cold nor cerebral. This conceptual music resounds with rare emotion and warm majesty.
