This gospel-infused, jazz-inspired sextet shows all the little boy vocal harmony groups how it's done. The lyrics are geared towards God, but the slick, bubbly production is cool and soulful R&B all the way. Their picture-perfect, rhythmically fascinating voice texturing certainly doesn't need any embellishment; however, on hand to lend support are Stevie Wonder, Ray Charles, Kirk Whalum, and Gerald Albright
While the universal Little Feat story does not end with the death of Lowell George, the brilliant early synthesis effected by his interactions with Barrere and Payne sadly does. But the end does not occur before one of the best live bands was captured as such. Waiting for Columbus is the document of a touring band doing what they do best. It's opening, an a cappella "Join The Band" leads to the introduction followed by a nuclear kinetic shuffle that can only be laid down by Richie Hayward and Lowell George on cowbell/percussion. After the groove is established the entire band flows in with Paul Barrare's sleek slide guitar leading the way. "Fat Man In the Bathtub," that beautiful nugget of double-entendre from Dixie Chicken becomes a force of nature. Live, this song is transformed into a frenetically molten expression of desire, requite and humor.
Little Feat have graduated from somewhat eclectic beginnings in 69 to grow into, some 39 years later, an American musical institution. And although nobody could disagree that the heart of the band died the day they lost Lowell George, precious few could claim that they havent maintained a respectful level of musicianship loyal to their original dream. Their fan base has, in fact, crossed generational lines.
Little Feat is an American band who have mixed blues, R&B, country and rock and roll styles together since they formed in 1969 in Los Angeles, and are known for their eclectic blend of many forms of music. They were founded by the brilliant songwriter/singer Lowell George (who died in 1979), keyboardist Bill Payne, and drummer Richie Hayward (who passed away in 2010).
Little Feat continued in that direction on Time Loves a Hero (1977), the double-live album Waiting for Columbus (1978), and Down on the Farm (1979). Frustrated with the band's increasingly improvisational and jazzy nature, George recorded a solo album, Thanks I'll Eat It Here, which was released in 1979. Following its release, George announced that Little Feat had broken up, and he embarked on a solo tour. Partway through the tour, he died of an apparent heart attack. Rocky Mountain Jam arrived in early 2007. Join the Band, a collection of duets with Feat friends and fans, followed in 2008 on Proper Records. After a struggle with liver disease, founding Feat member Richie Hayward passed away from pneumonia and lung disease on August 12, 2010. Little Feat continued to tour after his death, enlisting Gabe Ford as their new drummer.
