Hipnosis is a studio album by saxophonist Jackie McLean, featuring selections recorded for Blue Note Records in the 1960s, but not released until 1978. The album was released in the US as a two-fer (BN-LA 483-H2), which included five tracks from a 1967 session, plus six tracks recorded in 1962 later appeared on the CD reissue of Vertigo (see In Japan, it was released the same year as a standard LP (ST-83022) with a different cover, featuring only the 1967 tracks.

Tippin' The Scales" is an excellent session. It is prime McLean, with another precious opportunity to hear Sonny Clark. The entire rhythm section is in the pocket. The music was shelved at the time, because Blue Note was focusing on McLean's experimental work, none of which matches this album for enjoyable listening. Michael Cuscuna put this album out on CD, with three worthy alternate takes, in 1989. Apparently, it went out-of-print. In response to requests, Michael reissued it in 1995, with the 1989 mastering. For me, this is Jackie's best album in the early 1960s. CD has very ugly artwork and layout. The Japanese version has superior design, including the picture used on the session's first appearance, on a Japanese vinyl album. Reply Notify me Helpful.

Since the album wasn't really in keeping with the direction McLean was heading (and since that direction proved to be successful), it stayed in the vaults for 22 years before finally seeing the light of day in 1984. As one might expect, given the nearly universal quality of McLean's Blue Note output, Tippin' the Scales is solid from top to bottom, even if it's not nearly as forward-looking as its predecessor.

Notes

Recorded at the Van Gelder Studio, Englewood Cliffs, New Jersey on September 28, 1962.

Tracks 2, 7 & 8 previously unissued and do not appear on LP configuration

The classic Blue Note albums which span the mid 1950's to late 1960's were recorded directly on to two track analog tape. No multitrack recording was used and consequently no mixing was required. Therefore, this CD was made by transferring the one step analog master to digital.
