The Unique Thelonious Monk is a 1956 album from Thelonious Monk, his second for Riverside Records and like his Riverside debut, is made up of standards. It was a continuation of Riverside's strategy to broaden consumer interest in Monk by having him record cover versions of well-known material which, Riverside hoped, would help to break down the prevailing perception that Monk's original music was "too difficult" for mass-market acceptance.

The seven-song Unique Thelonious Monk (1956) platter was the pianist's second during his remarkable five-year tenure on Riverside. His debut for the label was the aptly titled Plays Duke Ellington (1955) and once again, on this disc, Monk's song selection did not feature any original compositions. Rather, the well-chosen standards included exemplify and help further establish the pianist and bandleader within the context of familiar melodies at the head of a trio - consisting of Oscar Pettiford (bass) and Art Blakey (drums).

He had a unique improvisational style and made numerous contributions to the standard jazz repertoire, including "'Round Midnight", "Blue Monk", "Straight, No Chaser", "Ruby, My Dear", "In Walked Bud", and "Well, You Needn't".

Not sure what the source for this pressing was, but it sounds uncompressed and warm. This is my first Thelonious Monk record and I enjoy his style immensely. He has a dissonant style that somehow works even though it almost seems like it shouldn't. My 20-year old son and I have been listening to a lot of Brubeck lately, as well as Miles Davis and wanted to branch out to other jazz musicians.
