The Button-Down Mind of Bob Newhart is a 1960 live album by comedian Bob Newhart. Recorded at the Tidelands Club in Houston, Texas, the debut album by Newhart was number one on the Billboard pop album chart and won Album of the Year at the 1961 Grammy Awards, where Newhart was named Best New Artist. It was the first comedy album to win Album of the Year and the only time a comedian had won Best New Artist.

Button Down Mind Strikes Back,The. This cd is absolutely hilarious! It brought back a lot of memories since I have listened to this recording before. When I was much younger,my parents had Button Down Mind of Bob Newhart on vinyl and I had listened to it so many times that I memorized all of the stories and routines.

Today we look back at the 1960 comedy album, The Button-Down Mind of Bob Newhart, an album that changed not only the life of the guy who recorded it, but the very face of comedy and the way the world experienced standup, forever. In 1958, Newhart was working as a copywriter in Chicago for a film and television producer. When listening to the album in the 21st century, the thing that immediately strikes the listener is how it is unlike anything being done in modern standup. The music community was quick to recognize Newhart as well. The Button-Down Mind became the first (of two) comedy album to win a Grammy for Album of the Year, and Bob remains the only comedian to ever win a Grammy as Best New Artist. Newhart created a masterpiece, changed what a standup performance could be, and recorded the 20th best-selling album of all time on the Billboard charts.

Though not the first standup comedian to release a live recording, Bob Newhart was probably the first to really capture the public's attention, thanks to this debut. Of the six pieces included on this album, five of them are set up as part of a conversation (usually by phone), something that became Newhart's trademark.
