East-West is the second album by The Butterfield Blues Band, released in 1966 on Elektra Records, EKS 7315 in stereo, EKL 315 in mono. It was recorded at the famed Chess Studios on 2120 South Michigan Avenue in Chicago. It peaked at on the Billboard pop albums chart, but is regarded as highly influential by rock and blues music historians. Like the band's record debut, this album features traditional blues covers and the guitar work of Mike Bloomfield and Elvin Bishop.

If the Butterfield Blues Band's groundbreaking debut earned the respect of the group's elder influences, this one won over (and guided) the blues boys' psychedelic peers. Highlighted by the 13-minute-plus title track (an Eastern-influenced jam cowritten by guitarist Mike Bloomfield), East-West stretches the boundaries of the blues. It would prod many lesser groups to explore, with generally dreary results, interminable free-flight explorations. But while East-West and a cover of jazzman Cannonball Adderly's "Work Song" ventured in new directions, Paul Butterfield.

Paul Butterfield was an iconic blues harmonica player and singer, famous for his in 1963 formed Paul Butterfield Blues Band. Their 1966 releases classic East West is one of the outstanding albums in which they integrated psychedelic rock in traditional blues music. 180 gram audiophile vinyl. More THE BUTTERFIELD BLUES.

That both things were wrapped up inside the Paul Butterfield Blues Band’s East-West, however, is undeniable - and, in the end, the album became a cornerstone for the group’s 2015 ascension into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. Butterfield was joined on his sophomore record by guitarist Elvin Bishop, bassist Jerome Arnold, keyboardist Mark Naftalin, drummer Billy Davenport and lead guitarist Mike Bloomfield, who, like Butterfield, was at his peak. East-West opened doors not just for the blues, but for all of rock. Butterfield stirred in raga and jazz, led the others on searing flights of fancy and played the harp with a fire and wit that drew favorable comparisons to legends like Sonny Boy Williamson II and Little Walter Jacobs. East-West arrived in August 1966 as a swift kick to the doors of convention, in particular with its Eastern influences and long-form jams.
