A 1949 Crusade in Los Angeles caught the attention of newspaper magnate William Randolph Hearst. The resulting national and international news coverage launched Billy Graham into prominence. The Crusade was supposed to last three weeks but ran for eight as Billy preached the Gospel. In 1949, night after night, crowds continued to pack a Los Angeles tent as the momentum of the city rally continued to build. Billy Graham with the Rev. Grady Wilson, Cliff Barrows and George Beverly Shea.

Cliff Barrows, the longtime music director for the Billy Graham Evangelistic Association who traveled the globe with the famed evangelist for decades, has died at age 9. He and soloist George Beverly Shea, who died in 2013, were the core of a worship team that helped set the stage for Graham's preaching. Watch the Billy Graham Evangelistic Association's video tribute to Cliff Barrows above. Cliff Barrows was one of the closest friends my wife Ruth and I ever had.
The Billy Graham Evangelistic Association (BGEA) is a non-profit Christian outreach organization.
William Franklin Graham, J. known as Billy Graham to most of the world, was born on November 7, 1918, near Charlotte, North Carolina, to William Franklin and Morrow Coffey Graham. Billy was the first of four children, followed by Catherine, Melvin, and Jean. In 1919 he was baptized as an infant by sprinkling at Chalmers Memorial Church. William Franklin, S. was a successful farmer and businessman. Both parents were Christians and the family regularly attended the Associate Reformed Presbyterian Church. Cliff Barrows and George Beverly Shea appeared with him on the platform. In November 2013, he participated in one last outreach effort, the My Hope campaign, an evangelistic appeal broadcast on television and distributed on DVDs. Following this event, he lived in retirement with Ruth in Montreat, but remained involved BGEA administration and planning.
As Billy Graham is laid to rest in North Carolina today, the 2,000 invited funeral attendees will listen to-or sing together-six songs. Graham, who planned his own funeral, was the one who chose them. In this, he seems to have taken the path of his longtime music director Cliff Barrows. Over the years, crowds gathered at airports, train stations, or hotels to welcome or farewell Billy Graham, Cliff Barrows, and George Beverly Shea with the singing of Fanny Crosby’s To God Be the Glory. The inclusion of a Stuart Hamblen song pointed back to Graham’s first Los Angeles crusade (1949) when Hamblen was one of the celebrities who made a public profession of faith.
Billy Graham and George Beverly Shea singing at a crusade in Dallas in 1987. His death was announced by the Billy Graham Evangelistic Association. Cliff Barrows has led more people in singing than any other man in the world, Mr. Graham said in 1992. The pairing of the two men was serendipitous. His uncanny ability to lead a crusade choir of thousands of voices or an audience of a hundred thousand voices in a great hymn or gospel chorus is absolutely unparalleled, Mr. Graham wrote in his 1997 autobiography, Just as I Am. And for Mr. Graham, the collaboration could never be anything but lifelong.
