Tender Buttons is the third studio album by British indie electronic band Broadcast. It was released on 19 September 2005 by Warp. Upon its release, Tender Buttons received acclaim from critics but failed to place in international charts. America's Boy", the lead and only single from the album, peaked at No. 139 in the UK Singles Chart. The album remains their most recent album that isn't a collaborative project or a soundtrack.

Album · 2005 · 14 Songs. Whittled down from the full-band ensemble of Haha Sound, only Broadcast’s core duo of Trish Keenan and James Cargill appear on Tender Buttons. Fittingly, the album takes its inspiration from Neu! and early Kraftwerk, two-person outfits that helped define the influential Krautrock sound. The motorik pulse of those seminal German groups is the recurring theme of Tender Buttons, especially on Black Cat and Bit 35, the last of which is a hypnotic recreation of early Kraftwerk

Reflecting their newly streamlined status as a duo, Broadcast's Tender Buttons strips their luminous electronic pop down to its barest essence. Initially, the album is a shock, and not always a pleasant one; many Broadcast fans have come to expect each release as a chance to be blown away by the group's ever-bigger and better sounds, and from their early EPs to the ornate Haha Sound, Broadcast seemed to challenge themselves by adding more layers and twists and turns to their music. Here, Trish Keenan and James Cargill push themselves to do more with much less

Tender Buttons is the third song on the album of the same name. The coal, the coal light The callus, the caress The comb, the calm The colours, the cortex The code, the codeine The comma, the context The collector, the green The fine, the fall The financier, the dream The fen, the fine The fin, the defend The fawn, then do. If you thought Haha Sound was a sonic mess, you might want to bring a Dust Buster with you for your first go with Tender Buttons. Where The Noise Made By People eagerly embraced listeners with its pastiche of groovy space-age bachelor pad couture and timeless pop songsmithery, Haha Sound was more standoffish at first blush. The tunes were there, but they were covered in a bit of soot. Those able to look past the static were rewarded; the clash between the off-putting sounds and the melodies created something greater. The same plan of attack is in place for this album.

They sound just like Steriolab to me...I don't know what all the fuss is about.
Mopimicr
A much much much better stereolab! This is their masterpiece in my humble opinion!
Shazel
An indy group with strikingly similar vocals. But jermainejagger is right in saying that this is much more, a sort of, organic sound. It benifits because of this and I would much rather listen to this than Steriolab. This is who they are anyway; http://www.discogs.com/artist/388-Stereolab

their sound is quite different in my opinion.. stereolab is more melodic... while broadcast is a bit more experimental.both dreamlike at times yet broadcast dreams are a bit more "strange"
GoodBuyMyFriends
Never heard of Steriolab...

One of the finest rock albums I own. Trish Keenan and James Cargill made this ablum as a duo, instead of being backed the larger ensemble from prior albums. And while the sound changed, the artistic success of this album is evidence of just how much Trish and James must have been united in their art, and in what Broadcast was doing up to this point. It is my impression that prior members perhaps toured with them for this album, however I was not lucky enough (or mature enough in my taste at the time) to see Broadcast when they toured for this album. Tender Buttons succeeds because it surpasses the sum of its elements. The contrasts are where much of the its strength is found. The sometimes pop melodies coat the complexity and thoughtfulness of the poety, and the dissonance of the instrumentation scratches the surface of exquisitly composed melodies. What you find is an album for close listens, an album whose rewards are rich but require attention and engagement. This is an album to be enjoyed for many years. If you give it time, it doesn't just pass through. It leaves a need for more, and if you are so inclined, seek out their earlier works for more top-notch art.
