One of a Kind is an album by the British band Bruford. It was released in 1979 and is a collection of progressive melodies with much jazz exploration, in style that can be defined within the limits of jazz fusion. The group led by drummer Bill Bruford features guitarist Allan Holdsworth, bassist Jeff Berlin and keyboardist Dave Stewart.

Bill Bruford ended his brief affair with . and condensed his original outfit to a quartet, releasing a second album of sinewy, celebratory jazz/rock fusion, One of a Kind. Good-humored twists and turns abound in the music, punctuated by Bruford's steadying if slightly subversive rhythms, Allan Holdsworth's flashes of fire, Jeff Berlin's insistent bass, and Dave Stewart's remarkably colorful keyboards

Bruford resumed activity in his own group to release One of a Kind (1979). Almost entirely instrumental, the album contains some spoken lines by Bruford during the introduction to "Fainting in Coils". Subsequent gigs spawned the live releases Rock Goes to College and The Bruford Tapes (1979). He was always really free thinking about electronic drums and things like that and I always appreciated that a lot, especially at one point when all of a sudden it became so uncool to use electronic drums, but I just thought, 'Ah, man, everyone should do what pleases themselves'. So yes, he was a big influence in that way.

Bruford One of a Kind Winterfold Records BBWSF 004 CD Released 1979; reissued 2005. By the time One of a Kind was recorded two years later, the core group from Feels Good to Me had become even more focused. Bruford restricted himself to the drum kit, likely in an effort to create a recording that could more easily be reproduced live. Bruford is still the primary composer, but the album also features a tune by Stewart and Alan Gowan, another sadly under-appreciated keyboardist who worked with Stewart in early incarnations of National Health, and a tune by Holdsworth. That "Hell's Bells" and "The Abingdon Chasp" seemed to fit seamlessly within the overall complexion of the album is simply a testament to the fact that, while every member was a strong musical personality, they were also an ensemble that moved forward with a singular vision.
