The Northern Jazz Orchestra - That's The One flac album

The Jazz Composer's Orchestra is a 1968 album by the Jazz Composer's Orchestra recorded over a period of six months with Michael Mantler as composer, leader and producer. Many of the key figures in avant-garde jazz from the time contributed on the album including Don Cherry, Pharoah Sanders, Gato Barbieri, Larry Coryell, Roswell Rudd, and Carla Bley. The album's finale features a two-part concerto for Cecil Taylor and orchestra.

The Northern Jazz Orchestra came together in 1976 as an antidote to the classical curriculum for music degree students at Huddersfield University. Rehearsals would take place every Tuesday night and the assembled band enjoyed themselves to such an extent that it was decided that they should start looking for gigs. When graduation loomed for the NJO in 1979 it was decided that an album should be made as a memento for the players. Manager John Dean cut a deal with the SRT label and off they went to Willerby for a day of recording and a day of mixing with Keith Herd. The seventeen assembled players squashed themselves into the tiny Fairview live room and laid down their set. The title of the "That's the One" LP deriving from the cries of relief after a successful take. After graduating in 1979, the majority of the NJO went their separate ways and impetuous was lost.

But that’s only one nail in this sturdy framework, planned with care by director Bob Washut and carried out flawlessly by his eager young charges. Even when the music is less welcome to these ears (as on Todd Munnik’s Guten Tag, Ziggareten? ), it is no less well–performed by the ensemble. Washut’s lush arrangement of the Bernstein/Sondheim ballad Somewhere, featuring guest clarinetist Jack Graham, sounds as though it would have fit quite snugly into Kenton’s West Side Story.

The Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra, led by Wynton Marsalis, is made up of 15 of the finest soloists, ensemble players, and arrangers in jazz music today. The mission of Jazz at Lincoln Center is to entertain, enrich and expand a global community for jazz through performance, education and advocacy.

Except that the best is yet to come: a 34-minute, two-part composition, a concerto for Cecil Taylor and orchestra, that finds the pianist at the height of his powers, just beginning to enter the third phase of his development where he fused ultra-high energy playing with rigorous logic and heartbreaking beauty.

Her success as a singer began with The Stan Kenton Orchestra. She pursued a solo career from 1954 and is best known for her debut album Something Cool. After her death, she was hailed as "one of the finest and most neglected singers of her time.
