The Jazz Composer's Orchestra is a 1968 album by the Jazz Composer's Orchestra recorded over a period of six months with Michael Mantler as composer, leader and producer. Many of the key figures in avant-garde jazz from the time contributed on the album including Don Cherry, Pharoah Sanders, Gato Barbieri, Larry Coryell, Roswell Rudd, and Carla Bley. The album's finale features a two-part concerto for Cecil Taylor and orchestra.

Communication (Jazz Composer's Orchestra album). Communication is the debut album by the Jazz Composer's Orchestra featuring compositions by Michael Mantler and Carla Bley performed by Paul Bley, Steve Lacy, Jimmy Lyons, Roswell Rudd, Archie Shepp, John Tchicai, Fred Pirtle, Willie Ruff, Ken McIntyre, Robin Kenyatta, Bob Carducci, Kent Carter, Steve Swallow, Milford Graves, and Barry Altschul. The album was released on the Fontana label in 1965.

More than forty-five years later The Jazz Composer's Orchestra Update brings together some of Mantler's more recent colleagues-as well as new faces-in a collection that rivals the original in terms of freshness and enthusiasm. Mantler has consistently worked with variations of his signature style, so not surprisingly there is an element of familiarity in The Jazz Composer's Orchestra Update. Personnel: Michael Mantler: composer/trumpet; Nouvelle Cuisine Big Band: Christoph Cech: conductor; Harry Sokal: tenor and soprano saxophones; Wolfgang Puschnig: alto saxophone, flute; Bjarne Roupé: guitar; David Helbock: piano; Radio String Quartet Vienna: Bernie Mallinger, Ingmar Jenner: violin; Cynthia Liao: viola; Asja Valcic: cello. Title: The Jazz Composer’s Orchestra Update Year Released: 2014 Record Label: ECM Records.

The players included in the Jazz Composer's Orchestra read like a who's who of jazz heavyweights: Pharoah Sanders, Don Cherry, Larry Coryell, Cecil Taylor, Gato Barbieri, Roswell Rudd, Steve Swallow, Carla Bley, Jimmy Lyons, Reggie Workman, Ron Carter, and Charlie Haden to name a few. The music they recorded on this album is nothing short of revolutionary. Sometimes when I turn on this album I feel like I'm being assaulted by the orchestra, but I'm always somehow struck by the beauty of the discordant nature of the music
