DIXIE DREGS - documentary.

The trio recorded one more album together before Morse introduced Van Romaine and Dave Larue, who would continue to record together into the 21st century. This is an important work in the timelines of Steve Morse, the Dixie Dregs, and even Kansas (sort of). Morse's kickoff of this phase of his career would also have a big impact on Van Romaine and Dave Larue, who don't appear here but probably wouldn't have the careers they do today if Steve Morse had stayed in the Dregs. The best songs are Cruise Missile, which starts the album on an agressive note (this one would have been a Dregs classic), General Lee, the obligatory Dixie breakdown tune, witha cameo by Albert Lee, and Huron River Blues, a three part proggy piece. This is a must for Dregs lovers. Steve Morse has been involved with some pretty good bands in his career, most notably the DIXIE DREGS.

The Dixie Dregs evolved from an Augusta, Georgia band called Dixie Grit, formed by Steve Morse and Andy West in 1970. The band featured Morse's older brother Dave on drums, Frank Brittingham (guitar and vocals) and Johnny Carr (keyboards). Carr was later replaced by Mark Parrish. Their fourth album, Night of the Living Dregs (featuring Morse, West, Sloan, Parrish, and Morgenstein), was released in April 1979, gaining the band their first Grammy nomination for Best Rock Instrumental Performance - won that year by Paul McCartney's band Wings. Night of the Living Dregs included studio recordings as well as compositions performed live and recorded at the Montreux Jazz Festival on July 23, 1978.
