La Stupenda ~ The Supreme Voice of Joan Sutherland. This is quite possibly the recording of the century. I may be biased because I believe Dame Joan to be the greatest singer that has ever existed, but this is a true masterclass in bel canto singing. Those who think she was simply a vocal technician are truly misguided. Yes, she had to worry more about the vocal production as the voice aged, but what is presented here is a fantastic melding of emotion, expression, and agility. b) This album makes you think of all the bel canto scores which were never performed by Sutherland, and which, if done so, would have saved us from all the mediocre singing we endure with Bellini and Donizetti operas today.
