Sugarsmack were an American alternative rock band based in Charlotte, North Carolina formed by Hope Nicholls and Aaron Pitkin. The group was put together after Hope had departed from her previous band, Fetchin Bones, and had begun to write new music with Pitkin. They began to collaborate with guitarist Chris Chandek, who was eventually asked to join permanently along with his friend John Adamian and Deanna Gonzalez

Sugarsmack's first - and, as it would turn out, last - major-label album, 1998's Tank Top City, is a huge improvement over 1993's Top Loader. That album had found the North Carolina-based band led by singer Hope Nicholls and bassist Aaron Pitkin (both ex-Fetchin Bones) being overpowered somewhat by producer Martin Atkins. Tank Top City is both weirder and more satisfying, with a much more overt sense of humor. The lyrics are almost dada in their sensibility, with bizarre non sequiturs colliding in nearly every verse.

After the group's breakup, Nicholls formed Sugarsmack with her boyfriend/guitarist Aaron Pitkin, enlisting percussionist Deanna Gonzales, drummer John Adamian, and second guitarist Chris Chandek to round out the band.
