For You is the debut studio album by American recording artist Prince. It was released by Warner Bros. Records on April 7, 1978. Prince started recording in September 1977 at Sound 80 in Minneapolis, Minnesota, where he had previously made a demo. Friend and producer David Rivkin (later known as David Z) provided advice and engineering assistance.
On his debut album, For You, Prince shows exceptional skill for arranging and performing mainstream urban R&B and funk, but his songwriting remains conventional. Only on the mildly racy "Soft and Wet" does he demonstrate a personal touch, but the song is still more of a promise than a fulfillment. While For You isn't a bad record, it is merely a pleasant one, and it offers very little indication of his staggering talents.

The album bore the soon-to-be classic tag "produced, arranged, composed, and performed by Prince", as it featured him writing all the songs and playing all 27 instruments on the record. The album was intended to establish Prince as an artist and to prove his merits; it was produced to the point of spending triple the allotted budget. Because of this, his next album would have to have some hits to recoup the somewhat lackluster release.
For You is the first full-length studio album by Prince, and the first Prince-related release of any kind. The album was released when Prince was 19 years old, in April 1978, receiving international release later based on his success in the years that followed. The album sessions took place at Record Plant, Sausalito, CA, USA, from 1 October 1977 to 22 December 1977, before overdubs and mixing were done in early January 1978 at Sound Labs, Los Angeles, CA, USA. While Warner Bros. An early configuration of the album contains a different sequence and including the unreleased tracks Make It Through The Storm (here titled We'll Make It Through The Storm) and Amber Eyes.

For many Prince fans, his 1979 self-titled sophomore album - featuring his first top 40 hit on the Billboard Hot 100, I Wanna Be Your Lover - marked the real beginning of his recording reign.
