Blood Ceremony, from Canada, have released back in 2008 a very obscure album that nobody seemed to notice. This year, they're receiving much more attention, thanks to "Living With The Ancients". Alia O'Brien is clearly the driving force in this group, delivering the band's distinctive flute and organ playing in addition to almost all the vocal chores.

Living with the Ancients. Canadian retro-rock quartet Blood Ceremony plod the same groove worn deep by Black Sabbath, Uriah Heep, and other blues-rockers in the late '60s and early '70s. Their debut CD was a pretty decent effort, except for the vocalist, who was flat and tuneless.

Blood Ceremony's style has been described as "flute-tinged witch rock" and their lyrics are filled with black magic imagery and references to classic horror films The band is fronted by ist Alia O'Brien, whose flute solos are reminiscent of Jethro Tull's Ian Anderson Contents. The band's self-titled debut studio album was released in 2008, followed by Living with the Ancients in 2011, both on Rise Above Records Blood Ceremony spent the latter part of 2009 touring throughout Europe with Electric Wizard

Living with The Ancients has been added to your Cart. Great album, it basically continues what Blood Ceremony had started in s/t. This record incorporates elements of doomy, kicking-psych, prog and folk-rock; if you loved the 70s vibe of their previous work, you'll most likely dig the atmosphere on this one. Guitars, bass, drums and Alia's flute and keyboards altogether sound thick, solid, and very vibrant, all complementing each other. The only thing that slightly bothered me at first was the thought of how the album cover could probably be a little more colorful and artistic, but that's really not important.

As is interestingly obvious on their debut, the main theme recurring throughout is, well, the Occult, and theories surrounding that very term. Blood Ceremony, a band that are high in originality and creativity, will not be seen headlining the London Roundhouse anytime soon. But its that underground feel to their bluesy and doomy attempt at making music that makes them stand out from the crowd. Even now, having been signed to a label full of underground bands, their success and stature grows, but only gradually, like a caterpillar or larvae cocooning itself.
