The Astronauts developed out of a group, The Stormtroupers, which was originally formed at Boulder High School, Boulder, Colorado in 1956 by Jon "Storm" Patterson (vocals, guitar), Robert Graham "Bob" Demmon (guitar; born February 11, 1939), and Brad Leach (drums). In 1961, they became The Astronauts after adding Richard Otis "Rich" Fifield (vocals, guitar) and Dick Sellars (guitar), the change of band name recognising the fascist connotations of the previous name (despite the different spelling) and to pay tribute to local hero, astronaut Scott Carpenter. Everything Is A-OK! (1963).

Collectables' Surfin' with the Astronauts, Everything Is A-OK! combines the Astronauts' first two records.

SongMeanings is a place for discussion and discovery.

This album is quintessential Astronauts sound and needs to be part of anyone's surf (or even just American beach music) collection. The playing & mixes are tight and (unlike some other more famous bands), these guys could really play the hell out of their instruments. Grew up in Denver - loved it when The Astronauts hit the local air-waves in 1963. Saw some shows at local theaters. Moved to CA in 1964 - near "Surf City!" Moved back to CO in 1974. Temporary housing in The Harvest House in Boulder. One night there was a big noise from the top floor of the hotel. The CU class of '64 was having a 10-year reunion and coerced The Astronauts to play. Paid them a few bucks and went in - HEAVEN! Surf music that makes your chest throb.

Everything Is A-OK! G. .Go!! Competition Coupe. It's All Done By Mirrors. Rockin' with the Astronauts. Considering that, by their own admission, the Astronauts had not only never played surf music, but had never heard of surf music before they were signed to record this album - which was done in two days during May of 1963 - the results are not only very good, but astounding. The long-player, which also marked only the group's second time in the recording studio (and the first for this version of the band), does what any good surf music album should do, imparting a sense of forward momentum and never letting up. From the opening cut, "Baja," the band acquits itself well on the instrumentals and decently on the vocal numbers, which include "Susie-Q," "Surfin' USA," and "Baby Let's Play House.
