Richard Maxfield (February 2, 1927 – June 27, 1969) was a composer of instrumental, electro-acoustic, and electronic music. As a student at Berkeley and in Europe in the 1950's, he composed instrumental scores in a Neo-Classical style and then adopting 12-tone techniques, eventually studying at Princeton University with Milton Babbitt.

Contrary to the stereotype of serious electronic music as being difficult to listen to, many of the pieces are quite engaging for novices and electronic specialists alike. That's not to say there aren't plenty of more jarring or abstract pieces with minimal ambience or cut-up assemblages, or even occasional tracks that most listeners might find downright annoying (such as MEV's cacophonous "Spacecraft," mercifully placed at the very end of the first disc). The album is about connections, most obviously between acoustic and electronic sounds-cymbals and gongs ring in alien timbres, woodblocks and bamboo claves transform into gurgles or collapse into pure texture. But it’s also about connections in time and space. New Sounds showcased three radically different approaches: The first track on the A-side, Richard Maxfield’s Night Music, is a tape collage of pulses meant to evoke the antiphonal chirping of birds and insects on a summer night. Pauline Oliveros’ I of IV, which takes up the entirety of the B-side, is a real-time studio performance of squealing oscillators and tape delay, with an expressive character that would prefigure noise music and freeform electronic improv for decades to come. But the highlight of the set is undoubtedly Steve Reich’s Come Out.
