This CD is a dual reissue of Harold Budd's The Oak of the Golden Dreams and Richard Maxfield's Electronic Music. The album presents complex, haunting, and evocative electronic soundscapes. In these examples of musique concrete occurs the odd coincidence of jazz motifs, Korean folk music, spoken word, and more. The ebb and flow of tape loops present an aural kaleidoscope, exciting to the ear, in Maxfield's pieces. Maxfield's works date six to ten years prior to Budd's 1969 and 1970 creations

If the Maxfield pieces represent the state of new music in the months before minimalism was born, Harold Budd’s (b. 1936) works from 1970 reflect minimalism’s initial impact. The Oak of the Golden Dreams was made on the Buchla Box which Budd uses here as an electric organ capable of the kind of fast modal improv, over an unchanging E-flat drone, that Terry Riley and La Monte Young had been doing on saxophone and piano.

Talk about Richard Maxfield / Harold Budd - The Oak Of The Golden Dreams

Bought this if only for the Budd piece track#5 sounds like something very eastern in scale and its not unlike some of Peter Michael Hamel's very early solo recordings or Terry Riley. The piece consists of a drone note foundation with eastern snake charmer like soloing overdubbed. Yes its simplistic by today's standards but still an oddity in Budd's catalog. All done on a Buchla which makes it all the more special!
