Released as a single, it peaked at in the UK and in the US Billboard Hot 100. The opening seconds and guitar riff of Clay and Bell's original version of the song were prominently sampled in Rappin' 4-Tay's hip-hop single, "Playaz Club," which reached on the Billboard Hot 100 chart in 1994.

She left the Drinkard Singers in 1960 and made her first solo recording, "More Than You Know", on Ember Records. This was followed by further singles on several record labels, but with little commercial success, although "You Busted My Mind" later became successful on the UK's Northern soul club circuit. The song was included on Bell's album Private Numbers (1968). In 2000, Bell performed a live version of "Private Number" with Scottish rock band Texas. In 1999, the song was covered by English boy band 911 for their third studio album There It Is. 911 version.
