Bell stresses that it was quality as much as quantity that mattered. It was soon revived by Fantasy Records, primarily as a means of keeping older material in circulation. But in 2004, Concord gained control of Fantasy, and, by proxy, Stax. New music has been released under the Stax banner, including William Bell’s latest album, This Is Where I Live, which won the best americana album award at the 2017 Grammys. Michele Smith, vice president of Estate & Legacy Brand Management at Concord Music/Craft Recordings, believes these decades-old albums still resonate, based on how they influence current artists.

1969 marked a year that was full of both trepidation and excitement for Stax Records. Just one year before, the Memphis soul outlet ended its relationship with musical giant Atlantic Records, effectively leaving the label as an independent entity, without a music catalog (which had previously included a formidable collection of hits by Otis Redding, Carla Thomas and Sam & Dave, among others). Under the guidance of co-owner Al Bell, the label proceeded to rebuild and release an impressive collection of 27 albums and 30 singles in just a handful of months-a period known as Soul Explosion.

Craft recently kicked off the Soul Explosion campaign with three vinyl reissues exclusive for Record Store Day, held on April 13th: Albert King's Born Under A Bad Sign, the duets collection Boy Meets Girl: Classic Stax Duets and the compilation Stax Does The Beatles. Originally released in 1967, King's Stax debut is widely recognized as one of the most influential albums, heralding in the era of modern blues. Album Title: Boy Meets Girl. Release Date: 6/2/19. Artist: Johnnie Taylor.

This period was known as "Soul Explosion", with a sampler of the same name released as a two-LP set in May 1969. Throughout the year Craft will also reissue – both physically and digitally – a wide selection of full album reissues of the era by such Stax artists as Johnnie Taylor, Booker T. and the MGs, Carla Thomas, the Mad Lads, and more.

He called for a Soul Explosion. It began with the first Stax hit since the split with Atlantic, Johnnie Taylor’s Who’s Making Love. Next, Bell presided over the unprecedented release of 27 albums and 30 singles in a short period of time. Perhaps the crown jewel of the Stax reissue program is the two-disc Soul Explosion album which has been newly remastered and released on vinyl for the first time since 1969. Here’s the Soul Explosion tracklist: LP 1 - Side 1 Johnnie Taylor Who’s Making Love Jimmy Hughes Like Everything About You Booker T. & The MG’s Hang ’Em High Carla Thomas Where Do I Go Eddie Floyd I’ve Never Found A Girl (To Love Me Like You Do) Southwest .
