An enormous and impressive undertaking, The Complete Stax-Volt Singles 1959-68 box set was issued in 1991. While pleased with its content, hardcore collectors were nevertheless disappointed that it was not as complete as it claimed to be, as it featured all the A-sides and only selected B-sides. While highly welcome, its release left more than 100 of approximately 225 blue period Stax and Volt B-sides un-reissued in any form. The release of this CD coincides with the 50th anniversary of the Hit The Road Stax tour of the UK and Europe, which offered a gathering of almost all the company’s biggest selling artists. It was not the first time Stax acts had been to the UK, nor would it be the last for some of them. Neither was it the first time a collection of artists from a major US soul and R&B label had visited our shores.

Rare Stax B-sides compiled and on CD for the first time. You’d be wrong, though, as Stax’s quality control was incredibly consistent, and despite bighitters Otis Redding, Sam And Dave and Booker T & The MGs being absent, this new compilation is uniformly tremendous stuff.

Stax label recordings were reissued on the Atlantic label, and Volt label material on the Atco label. Gulf+Western-owned Stax/Volt releases used new label designs, new logos (including the recognizable finger snapping logo) and new catalogue numbering systems to avoid confusion among the record distributors. In 1988, Fantasy issued the various artists album Top of the Stax, Vol. 1: Twenty Greatest Hits. This marked the first time an album was issued with both Atlantic-owned and Fantasy-owned Stax material; it was issued by arrangement with Atlantic Records. A second volume was released by Fantasy in 1991. In 1991, Atlantic issued The Complete Stax/Volt Singles 1959–1968, a nine-disc compact disc boxed set containing all of the Atlantic-era Stax a-sides.
