And rediscovering it lit the touchpaper for the album we are here to discuss: the joyously alive Barbara, Barbara, We Face A Shining Future, an album with a title as peculiar and wonderful as all the others before it, which arrives this month full of heart, soul and brilliant noise. Three days before we meet in their rural Essex idyll, Underworld are in Bristol, kicking off their new album campaign with a televised headline slot at Colston Hall for the 6 Music Festival. In two weeks they will perform a rooftop gig in Japan and a spot on the country’s equivalent of Top of the Pops, on which only a handful of western artists have played, including Madonna and Metallica.

Dance survivors Underworld will release their ninth album, Barbara Barbara, we face a shining future, on March 18. So what’s in this shining future? Well, according to a press release it’s the elegiac swoop of strings as they stretching out across off-world electronics; a demented lupine howl that curls itself into an unshakeable earworm; celestial techno and South American acoustics; voices that warp into harmonic riffs; found lyrics that form fine-tuned monolgues. Underworld will also play a limited number of European shows in March. Stream the first taste of Barbara Barbara below.

See All. an (20th Anniversary Remaster).

Once Underworld dealt exclusively in the sweaty intensity of rave culture. These days, they're older, mellower and, presumably, wiser, and their music tends to reflect this. Certainly, Barbara Barbara, We Face A Shining Future is an altogether deeper, groovier and more atmospheric set than their shouty 1990s fare, with genuine moments of heartfelt melancholy ("Motorhome") and Balearic bliss (the Arabic influences and Flamenco guitars of "Santiago Cuatro") amongst the tactile deep house, and woozy European tech-house grooves.
