Teatime Dub Encounters began as an attempt by the two opposite ends of the original soundtrack to Danny Boyle’s 1996 film Trainspotting – Iggy Pop, with Lust for Life, and Underworld, with Born Slippy (Nuxx) – to cook up something for the sequel, 2017’s T2. As Iggy told Trainspotting author Irvine Welsh over cream tea and scones in a recent interview for Q, Underworld essentially ambushed Iggy while he was staying at the Savoy last year. He was on tour with his last album, Post Pop Depression – at the time, suspected to be Iggy’s final word set to music. I’m tired of people looking at me all. As kismet would have it, his Post Pop Depression was released on the same day in 2016 as Underworld’s equally well-received latt erday album, Barbara Barbara, We Face a Shining Future: two artists not content to rest on their hedonistic reputations.

Teatime Dub Encounters is the result of a few clandestine hotel room recording sessions, that began a few weeks after Underworld and Iggy Pop had each released their last albums (Barbara Barbara, we face a shining future and Post Pop Depression respectively) on the same day (18 March 2016). It is neither historical or a tribute to past work, it is the work of artists in motion, engaged in a process that they both bring to all of their work – one that uses spontaneity as a spur for creativity

While Iggy’s latest effort, ‘Post Pop Depression‘ with Josh Homme and c. marked a late career highlight and Underworld’s ‘Barbara Barbara, We Face A Shining Future‘ also scored highly across the board, ‘Teatime Dub Encounters’ doesn’t pale in their shadow or smack of a vanity or side project. This is a whole new monster born of the friction from a restless need to create, the pure abandon to do whatever the fuck feels good, and the batshit brilliance from three mad scientists with so much still to prove.

Teatime Dub Encounters is a collaborative EP by British electronic music group Underworld and American singer-songwriter Iggy Pop. It was released on July 27, 2018 by Caroline International, except in Japan where it was released by Beat Records.

How could Iggy say no? Iggy and Underworld first moved in the same circles on the seminal ‘Trainspotting’ soundtrack (‘Lust for Life’ and ‘Born Slippy (Nuxx)’). This opportunistic EP was partly recorded at the Savoy Hotel at a meeting between Underworld and Iggy to discuss music for ‘T2 Trainspotting’ – film producer Danny Boyle was present via Skype. The first fruits were presented back in May and the EP was announced shortly afterwards
