The sessions for the album began before the recording of Bowie's Low (1977); thus, The Idiot has been called the unofficial beginning of Bowie's Berlin period.

Early days: 1960–1967. The Prime Movers, featuring Pop on drums. Bowie and Pop relocated to West Berlin to wean themselves off their respective drug addictions.
