Eleven years after releasing their first album and eight years after redefining themselves with Southern Rock Opera, the rare concept album whose execution was just as impressive as its ambitions, the Drive-By Truckers have gained a richly deserved reputation as one of the hardest-working and most rewarding rock bands for over a decade.

Unsurprisingly, the rarities on The Fine Print could make a good album, but the oddities are often distracting. Dylan's "Like a Rolling Stone", which they covered for Uncut magazine, is pretty much uncoverable, but the Truckers do as good a job as anyone else. Claus' Kimono" is about unrest among the elves and reindeer, who plot to off Santa. Hood's conspiratorial tone sounds as out of place here as the song's cartoonish concept, but at least they can poke a little fun at themselves.

There simply isn’t anything here that speaks to what has made Drive-By Truckers one of the smartest, most nuanced acts of the last decade, and there certainly isn’t anything here that’s essential listening. Those in need of a Truckers (or former Truckers) fix would be far better served by picking up Hood’s Murdering Oscar (And Other Love Songs) or Isbell’s phenomenal, unjustly slept-on Jason Isbell and the 400 Unit. Erotic Reruns is a collection of ultimately benign love songs, as the eroticism proposed by the album’s title is glaringly absent across 29 scant minutes. Yeasayer are amiable, starry-eyed musicians whose sound, at its best, is inviting even as it overreaches. But while a concern for authenticity may not be pop music’s primary enterprise, among its virtues is its capacity to consistently excite and enchant.

Drive-By Truckers peddle a thoughtful but strident Southern rock that nurtures the heart while stiffening the sinews, and remain the perfect chroniclers of redneck America’s soft underbelly. Warren Zevon’s Play It All Night Long is bathed in delta sludge; and what is TVA, a sensitive and complex exploration of the ethics of local-government employment schemes that somehow stings like a bittersweet love song, doing on an out-takes collection? These discarded scraps from Patterson Hood’s crew are tastier than most bands’ prime cuts.
