Rarities 1971–2003 is a compilation album by The Rolling Stones that was released in 2005 worldwide by Virgin Records – as well as by the coffee-chain Starbucks in North America – and features a selection of rare and obscure material recorded between 1971 and 2003. The album peaked at No. 76 on the Billboard chart.
That's certainly not the case. There are just three '70s cuts here, actually - four if you count the live "Mannish Boy," which appeared on the 1977 double live album Love You Live and the 1981 odds-n-sods collection Sucking in the.
If you’re in the market for just one Stones album this year, make it A Bigger Bang. But if you happen to be shopping for an additional stocking stuffer, you could do much worse than this odds-and-sods set. Most of the tracks on Rarities aren’t very rare - all of them have been previously released in some form. But this disc works as a discriminating collection of lesser-known gems. The live tracks are revelatory: They include a torrid Wild Horses, from 1995’s live album Stripped, and an achy rendition of Beast of Burden, from Sucking in the Seventies.
This grab bag of Rolling Stones gems features B-sides, live recordings, and remixes. Of course, logic has never been a factor in liking the Stones; it's all about the music, the attitude, and the energy, and there is plenty of that here. I'm glad to have many of these songs and versions in album form (1991's similar "Collectables" was not nearly as well mastered), but there are inexplicable re-runs from "Sucking In the Seventies" and too many good tracks from the Ron Wood era are simply MIA: 1 the complete 'Miss You' or the alternate cassette version.
ROLLING STONES RARITIES 1971-2003 A treasure trove of live recordings, B-sides and remixes selected from their archives by the Rolling Stones. Listen as the band reinterprets some of their greatest songs, retraces their blues and R&B roots and adds new textures to the most distinctive sound in rock 'n' roll. The Rolling Stones: Rarities 1971-2003. nme Nov 30, 2005 3:04 pm GMT. The Rolling Stones: Rarities 1971-2003. Brown Sugar’ with your Skinny Latte, sir? So following those other cultural revolutionaries Bob Dylan, Ray Charles and, erm, Alanis Morissette, The Rolling Stones have got into bed with Starbucks. Of course, this being the best rock’n’roll band ever, there are moments of quality. Miss You’ reminds us that, in the late ’70s, the Stones were masters at lounge lizard disco, while, even in a live version from 1997, ‘Wild Horses’ still tugs at the heartstrings. But really, unless you own everything else the Stones have ever even thought about releasing, there are far, far better ways of spending your cash. And much more ethical ones, too. Hamish MacBain.
