B1. 4 Allegro Con Spirito. Varationen Über ein Thema von Joseph Haydn Op. 56a. B2.

Originally released in 1965, this Deutsche Grammophon digital transfer sees the legendary team of the Berlin Philharmonic and Herbert von Karajan perform all four of Brahms’s symphonies. This was their first recording of the cycle together and is a testament to their unique and extremely rich interpretations of this Romantic master’s orchestral works. Symphony No. 2 in D major, Op. 73: 2.

Herbert von Karajan’s first performance with the Berliner Philharmoniker in April 1938 was a sensation – and aroused the jealousy of principal conductor Wilhelm Furtwängler, who from then on considered the young star his rival. Furtwängler died in 1954, and the direction of an America tour the year thereafter that had already been planned devolved to Karajan. He was an enthusiastic pilot, sports car driver, skier and sailor. He admired and revered Arturo Toscanini and Wilhelm Furtwängler, two musical personalities who could not have been more different, and made it his ambition to merge the best of both to his own style. A performance culture all of his own. One of his peculiarities was that he usually conducted concerts with his eyes closed, vexing many orchestra musicians.
