King Oliver's Jazz Band. Jazz Museum 1 (A Collection Of Historical Recordings) ‎(7", EP, Mono).

Joe "King" Oliver was born in Abend, Louisiana near Donaldsonville, and moved to New Orleans in his youth. Oliver played cornet in the New Orleans brass bands and dance bands and also in the city's red-light district, Storyville. The band he co-led with trombonist Kid Ory was considered New Orleans' hottest and best in the 1910s.

Late Spring Rain - a poem by Michael L. Newell. These sides are the first recordings of substance by an African-American jazz band and constitute the most significant corpus of early recorded jazz. Taylor calls his work a New Media Timeline, and it draws from established scholarship and includes photographs, audio recordings and film clips representative of the events described. While his hope is to someday complete the timeline by finishing the Oliver Band’s California trip, he is focused on another project at the moment. My goal is to present historical material in a novel way and thereby inspire new insights and perspectives about both the artists who pioneered jazz music and the times in which they lived.

The New Orleans Jazz Museum is a somewhat large building, but it’s not too difficult to experience most of what they have to offer while you’re here. As a matter of fact, a majority of visitors will spend around 2 hours here. In addition to their free performances on Tuesday, the New Orleans Jazz Museum also hosts several events throughout the week. You can expect to see historical items related to famous musicians such as Louis Armstrong, Dizzy Gillespie, Sidney Bechet, George Lewis and many more. The New Orleans Jazz Museum is located near the heart of the French Quarter, just a few blocks from both the French Market and Frenchmen Street. Depending on where your hotel is located, you may also want to just walk here. Another way to get here is via the streetcar because the French Market stop (Riverfront Line) is literally right across the street.
