Head is the soundtrack to the film Head, the only theatrical release by the Monkees. Released in 1968 through Colgems, it was the band's sixth album. Head was the last Monkees album to feature Peter Tork until Pool It! in 1987 and the last to feature all four Monkees until 1996's Justus

Band Name The Monkees. Erscheinungsdatum Dezember 1968. Labels WEA Rhino Records Colgems Records. Mitglieder die dieses Album besitzen1. 2. Porpoise Song (Theme from "Head"). 3. Ditty Diego-War Chant.

This disc contains songs and snippets of dialogue from the Monkees' full-length feature film of the same name. Although their Emmy-winning television program had been cancelled in the spring of 1968, the quartet quickly regrouped and, with the assistance of budding actor/director Jack Nicholson, created a 90-minute surreal cinematic experience - replete with matching soundtrack. Without question, both the movie and album are the most adventurous and in many ways most fulfilling undertaking to have been born of the Monkees' multimedia manufactured project. The music featured on both.

Head" was the Monkees sole movie, and for those who have seen the show but not the movie, it is definitely not what you're expecting, although the final episode of the show, "The Frodis Caper" starring Rip Taylor and directed by Micky Dolenz, hints at the surreal and psychedelic direction the band was moving in. "Head" takes the strange new direction of the band way further, and while a commercial flop largely because it was too mature for the Monkees' younger fans and it had an ineffectual yet avant-garde ad campaign, it is now rightly considered a cu. .Without question, the best song on the album, and one of the Monkees' greatest songs ever, is "Circle Sky," a wonderful Nesmith rocker (the most disturbing footage of the film also takes place during the course i. On this release the excellent live version is included as an bonus track.

The alternative songs include the stereo mix of ‘Porpoise Song’ with the long coda, a stereo mix of ‘Ditty Diego’, a stereo mix of ‘Circle Sky’ with Michael Nesmith’s vocals up front.

Famously, The Monkees were not permitted by their management to function as a working band for this album, with the group's contributions limited almost entirely to vocal tracks. Eight of the original LP's twelve tracks feature one lone Monkee singing lead vocal over instrumentation (and even backing vocals) recorded entirely by session musicians. Other tracks feature multiple Monkees singing over session players; only on the two tracks produced by Michael Nesmith does a Monkee (Peter Tork) get to play an instrument (guitar). Nesmith wrote or co-wrote these two tracks

Head" was the last Monkees album to feature all four original members. Guitarist Pete Tork left the band shortly after finishing the album. Though it's a soundtrack and not a regular album it contains some of the Monkees' finest recordings. Especially the two Carole King songs "Porpoise Song" and "As We Go Along" are outstanding. Also Tork's "Can You Dig it" and Nesmith's "Circle Sky" are Monkees classics.
