Redirected from The Monkees' Headquarters). Headquarters is the third album issued by the Monkees and the first with substantial songwriting and instrumental performances by members of the group itself, rather than by session musicians and professional songwriters. After a struggle for creative autonomy with their record label, the group had been allowed to record by themselves.
After the release of More of the Monkees, on which the band had little involvement beyond providing vocals and a couple Mike Nesmith-composed songs, the pre-fab four decided to take control of their recording destiny. After a well-timed fist through the wall of a hotel suite and many fevered negotiations, music supervisor Don Kirschner was out and the band hit the studio by themselves. With the help of producer Chip Douglas, the band spent some time learning how to be a band (as documented on the Headquarters Sessions box set) and set about recording what turned.
Headquarters was the third album released by the Monkees, but the first where they had any creative influence. It was their first attempt at working together on anything other than vocals and many predicted failure. To the surprise of critics everywhere, this album proved The Monkees were no longer just actors, they were musicians. In the late 1960’s, radio was ruled by bands like the Beatles, The Doors, Jefferson Airplane, Janis Joplin, The Moody Blues and so many other iconic bands that captured the turbulent times of the decade

The Monkees' third album Headquarters - and third consecutive LP to hit - was originally released in May 1967 and featured production by Chip Douglas, allowing the band greater creative control. Musically this is The Monkees first effort to play their own music after getting out from under the control of Don Kirshner and the put out a great album in the summer of 1967. Though the music leans toward a country sound in places and is a departure from the sound of The Monkees first two studio records. Introduced stand-outs including the Top 40 Michael Nesmith-penned hit "The Girl I Knew Somewhere," "You Just May Be The One," and "Randy Scouse Gi. Plus, Peter Tork's "For Pete's Sake," later used as The Monkees TV show's closing theme. It has been certified platinum.
