White Denim - Performance flac album

Recorded in White Denim’s new Radio Milk space in downtown Austin, with founding members James Petralli and Steve Terebecki manning the production booth, Performance sounds like a band rejuvenated-or at least a band that remembers what people liked about its music in the first place. The album kicks open the door with a run of cuts that play fast and loose with rhythm and melody, featuring miniature breakdowns and guitar-riff emissions so thick they might violate EPA standards. The colorful abundance of Performance is reminiscent of another om album from earlier this year: Chicago psych bros Post Animal’s When I Think of You in a Castle, which fused skill and melody to similarly potent effect.

White Denim is an American four-piece rock band from Austin, Texas, United States. Their music is influenced by dub, psychedelic rock, blues, punk rock, progressive rock, soul, jazz, experimental rock with home-based recording, jamming approach, intense looping work and unusual song structures. In March 2005, two bands, Parque Touch (Josh Block, James Petralli, Lucas Anderson) and Peach Train (Steve Terebecki), played a show together at Beerland in Austin, Texas.

White Denim go in hard for glam on their seventh album, but their penchant for psych is never too far from reach and Performance shimmers from end-to-end. Performance may be lacking in progress, but the effortlessness of their experiments is still very much present, and nine albums in, White Denim remain as playful as ever. Overall, longtime fans of the band are likely to be satisfied, if not dazzled, by their latest effort.

White Denim have crafted a classic sound, one that is rooted in tradition, both of the traditional rock and roll and the avant-garde varieties. They seem to not take themselves too terribly seriously though. As the press notes that accompany Performance state: "they write songs just dumb enough to drink, dance, and fight t. There you go, right there. Unlike some of their past work, Performance finds the band at its' most lean and focused. The album is a concise 33 minutes and it seems designed to be listened to while performing some task of one's own volition. Whether that's straight-up cardio at the gym, solitary driving on a busy highway, or serving as an early morning weekday morning wake-up call, White Denim have got your back. They're around to give you a sturdy kick in the ass, albeit one that comes with a sly grin on the band members' faces.

In the 2010s, a new White Denim album has coincided with a lineup change, and Performance sticks to the trend with two new recruits. This time out, keyboardist Michael Hunter and former NRBQ drummer Conrad Choucroun join original bandmembers James Petralli and Steve Terebecki for their ninth studio album. New blood has done little to radically change the Texas garage rockers' sound, and while technically there's very little to criticize, Performance never feels wholly fulfilling.
