Anne Patricia Briggs (born 29 September 1944) is an English folk singer. Although she travelled widely in the 1960s and early 1970s, appearing at folk clubs and venues in England and Ireland, she never aspired to commercial success or to achieve widespread public acknowledgment of her music.

Anne Briggs is a folk album released in 1971 by Anne Briggs. The songs are traditional apart from two Briggs originals, "Go Your Way" and "Living By The Water". In 2009 Blackwater Side was included in Topic Records 70 year anniversary boxed set Three Score and Ten as track four of the second CD in the set. On Record Store Day 2015 Topic records re-released the album on 180g vinyl.

I got that Anne Briggs EP, Hazards of Lov. was captivated by this woman’s voice and what she did with it. Anne Briggs was and still is one of the most enigmatic figures of the ‘60‘s and ‘70s folk scene, perceived by many as a reclusive-genius and as a rebel for shunning commercial success. Her decision to leave the folk scene in the 70’s for a life in Scotland as conservation worker and market trader have if anything increased her mythical status, something she was pretty much unaware of when she was interviewed by The Guardian for the reissue of her 1971 album The Time Has Come. Anne was born in 1944 in Toton, Beeston, Nottinghamshire. Her mother died of TB when she was young and her father was severely injured during WWII. She was brought up by her aunt and uncle who also lived in Toton.

Anne Briggs' beautiful, soft yet all the more emotional voice was the instrument that led the English folk revival that was one of the most important events of the 1960s. This and Sing A Song For You show how well she was able to convey traditional folk tales in an intimate, spontaneous manner that can ring a bell even in a time and place so remote from these realities. 5 people found this helpful.
