This Is What You Want. This Is What You Get is a 1984 album by Public Image Ltd. It is the band's fourth official studio album and includes the single "Bad Life" and a re-recorded version of a "This Is Not a Love Song", which had been a No. 5 UK and international hit when released as a single in 1983. Lydon’s band, Public Image Lt. was hired to do the soundtrack. The band worked on their material while Lydon was on set – his contributions to the album were made over the phone. Lydon, however, decided to completely scrap the already-recorded material and went into the studio once more to re-record the album that would become This is What You Wan. ith a group of session musicians. Undefeated, Levene decided to release Commercial Zone himself in America. Following a limited, self-distributed release of 40,000 copies, Virgin took legal action against Levene and prevented him from manufacturing any further copies. This is What You Wan. as released in July 1984.

Surprisingly for Lydon, the colorful tune has a simple beat and is easy to dance to, but lacks guts. The Pardon," like a couple other songs on the record, sounds like a bad Flowers of Romance outtake with "modern" production. With Atkins' relentless clippity-cloppity drums and Lydon's bite-free ess rambling, it eventually fades into the background as a nagging drone. with him and Jones present as the pseudo-bootleg Commercial Zone, on the short-lived PiL Records. It actually preceded the official version's release by months, and a second issue followed later in the year with a slightly different track listing.

Public Image’ is still one of music’s most vicious kiss-offs to a former band, manager and identity. When he opens his mouth, it all emerges in howled, yet precise and detailed, venom. The speed of PiL’s development is underappreciated. Album sessions in 1978, 1979 and 1980 yielded progressively more extreme interpolations of punk, pop, rock, and reggae, with The Flowers Of Romance representing the apotheosis of this growth spurt. The album is united by an introverted, housebound edge: the walls are so thin the neighbours listen in, doom sits in gloom in his room, it came out of the wall, a single cadaver, personal Auschwitz fermenting in bed.

This Is What You Get, which was re-recorded with session musicians. I feel my Commercial Zone was the purest version. Now I want to do the project embracing the original & proper PiL ethos. For me its unfinished business, a job that has to be done and I’m the one to do it. Not so much set the record straight but get the right record out the right way, and with the right name.
