Band of Gypsys is a live album by Jimi Hendrix and the first without his original group, the Jimi Hendrix Experience. It was recorded on January 1, 1970, at the Fillmore East in New York City with Billy Cox on bass and Buddy Miles on drums, frequently referred to as the Band of Gypsys. The album mixes funk and rhythm and blues elements with hard rock and jamming, an approach which later became the basis of funk rock.

About the album: Machine Gun: The Fillmore East First Show 12/31/69 documents the debut performance of Jimi Hendrix's short-lived but eternally influential, Band of Gypsys. The group played four historic concerts at the Fillmore East in New York City, two on New Year's Eve 1969, and two on New Year's Day 1970.

Band of Gypsys was the only live recording authorized by Jimi Hendrix before his death. Helping him out were longtime friends Billy Cox on bass and Buddy Miles on the drums because the Experience had broken up in June of 1969, following a show in Denver. This rhythm section was vastly different from the Experience. Buddy Miles was an earthy, funky drummer in direct contrast to the busy, jazzy leanings of Mitch Mitchell.

Band of Gypsys is a live album by Jimi Hendrix, released on March 25th, 1970 in the United States and June 12th, 1970 in the United Kingdom. All songs were written by Jimi Hendrix, except where noted. Machine Gun" – 12:39. Changes" (Buddy Miles) – 5:11. Power to Love" – 6:56. Message of Love" – 5:23.

Live, Reissued, Remastered. Band Of Gypsys (Live). Exclusive discount for Prime members. Sample this album Artist (Sample). But here is the best Hendrix live album. Certainly the best recorded of his concert albums. It almost resembles what later became known as "soundboard" live recordings.

Which is not to imply that it is any better than those Experience albums. The context of the album is vital - Band of Gypsys was one of Hendrix’ 1969 amalgamations consisting of Buddy Miles on drums and Billy Cox on bass, among others.
