The Great Otis Redding Sings Soul Ballads, simply referred to as Soul Ballads or Sings Soul Ballads, is the second studio album by American soul singer-songwriter Otis Redding, released in 1965. The album was one of the first issued by Volt Records, a sub-label of Stax Records, and Redding's first on the new label. Like Redding's debut Pain in My Heart (1964), Soul Ballads features both soul classics and originals written by Redding and other Stax Records recording artists.

Unlike Redding’s debut album, Sings Soul Ballads was released both on Atlantic’s subsidiary Atco Records and Stax’s Volt Records. While the album and its singles were moderately successful on the music charts, it includes Redding’s first top-ten single, Mr. Pitiful. The album received mixed critical reception. The aptly named Great Otis Redding Sings Soul Ballads (1965) builds upon the strength and relative success of the vocalist's solo debut long-player, Pain in My Heart (1964). The format - blending a few originals with well-chosen covers - remained consistent. However, increasingly evident is the strength of Redding's interaction with Booker T. Jones (organ), Steve Cropper (guitar/piano), Donald "Duck" Dunn (bass), and Al Jackson, Jr. (drums), aka Booker T. & the MG's. The Redding-penned titles likewise reflect his mentors, as "Chained and Bound" easily adopts the pleading conviction apparent in one facet of Cooke's music. The samba groove of "I Want to Thank You" and the midtempo bounce of "A Woman, a Lover, a Friend" reflect the lighter, fun-loving side à la Cooke's "Another Saturday Night" and "Everybody Loves to Cha Cha Ch.

The Great Otis Redding Sings Soul Ballads is a masterpiece, so it’s slightly unfortunate that just six months later, in September 1965, he somehow topped it with Otis Blue, which overshadowed it. Two albums like that inside half a year? These days, the record companies wouldn’t allow it. Back then, Otis had so much going for him, they couldn’t stop it. And if anyone felt that it was premature to apply the word Great to a singer’s second album, one listen t. oul Ballads justified it. Great, indeed. Follow the Stax Classics playlist here
