I Will Follow" is a song by rock band U2. It is the opening track from their debut album, Boy, and it was released as the album's second single, in October 1980. Lead singer Bono wrote the lyrics to "I Will Follow" in tribute to his mother who died when he was 14 years old. "I Will Follow" is the only song that U2 have performed on every tour since they released their first album. The song was U2's first music video, directed by Meiert Avis in Dublin, Ireland

U2. Produced by Steve Lillywhite. Album Boy. I Will Follow Lyrics. I was on the outside When you said, you said you needed me And I was looking at myself I was blind, I could not see. A boy tries hard to be a man His mother takes him by his hand If he stops to think, he starts to cry Oh, why? If you walk away, walk away I walk away, walk away I will follow If you walk away, walk away I walk away, walk away I will follow I will follow. Walk away, walk away I walk away, walk away I will follow If you walk away, walk away I walk away, walk away I will follow I will follow. Your eyes make a circle I see you when I go in there Your eyes Your, your, your eyes Your eyes, just give me Your, your, your eyes Mmm, mmm, mmm, mmm.

Contextually, if you follow the arc of the album, this is literally the only place they could have arrived at, praying for guidance in the blackness and desperation. The key to the song are the two ringing guitar chords in the chorus, which are a reveille calling out to God and to the disciple who’s lost faith. That’s I Will Follow, which I heard for the first time while sitting in traffic on the way home from my high-school part-time job, listening to the WNYU New Afternoon Show. The opening thrum of guitar notes, a literal siren, mystical bells in the distance, a rhythm section playing almost off-rhythm, and those opening lines, sung by a voice full of urgency and emotion: I was on the outside, When you said you needed me.

I was on the outside when you said You said you needed me I was looking at myself, I was blind I could not see. A boy tries hard to be a man His mother takes him by his hand If he stops to think he starts to cry Oh why? If you walkaway, walkaway I'll walkaway, walkaway-I will follow. If you walkaway, walkaway I'll walkaway, walkaway-I will follow (I will follow). I was on the inside When they pulled the four walls down I was looking through the window, I was lost I am found. I Will Follow" is a song by rock band U2. Composition and releases. I Will Follow" was written three weeks before U2 began recording Boy. U2 singer Bono has said that he wrote the song from his mother's perspective and that it was about the unconditional love a mother has for her child.

Here is an album that explicitly references the chaos and crisis of U2's early years without recapturing a molecule of the vibrancy that characterized early U2. Worse, first single "The Miracle (Of Joey Ramone)," with its aspirational whoops, finds the band cribbing lamely from the bands who cribbed lamely from U. Best track: "I Will Follow" Random fact: The album cover was reportedly changed in America because either U2 or the record label feared the band would become associated with pedophilia. Pop' was released in 1997 as U2's ninth album.
