Warhol’s painting of Canadian singer and actor Paul Anka, and one of the first sleeves to exhibit the brightly coloured print style of his most famous portraits. The Rolling Stones Love You Live (1977). Double live album featuring performances from the previous three years, Warhol was apparently dismayed to see that Jagger had added pencil smears to his design. Liza Minnelli At Carnegie Hall (1981). Liza’s forth live album, recorded in 1979, featuring one of Warhol’s less adventurous portraits. Billy Squier Emotions in Motion (1982).

Warhol designed many album covers for various artists starting with the photographic cover of John Wallowitch's debut album, This Is John Wallowitch!!! (1964). He designed the cover art for The Rolling Stones' albums Sticky Fingers (1971) and Love You Live (1977), and the John Cale albums The Academy in Peril (1972) and Honi Soit in 1981  . archive The Andy Warhol Foundation released its 20th Anniversary Annual Report as a three-volume set in 2007: Vol. I, 1987–2007; Vol. II, Grants & Exhibitions; and Vol.

Warhol produced three Kenny Burrell album sleeves along with one for Johnny Griffin. In later years, Miles would design covers for Bob Dylan, Chicago, Neil Diamond, and Cheap Trick. Yet it was also other labels like Prestige and Riverside who also produced some amazing covers, like Relaxin’ with The Miles Davis Quintet that was designed by Esmond Edmonds. Into the modern era and the glory days may have passed but there are still some classics as you will see from, our 100 Greatest Jazz album Covers. We’d love to hear from you, as to what are your most loved album covers within the jazz genre. We’ll produce an alternate ‘readers choice’ in the coming weeks.

In 1969, artist Andy Warhol was approached by the Rolling Stones to create the cover art for their upcoming greatest hits album, Through the Past, Darkly (Big Hits Vol. 2). Whatever Warhol created for the set was seemingly never used, but his concept of employing a working zipper on an album cover came to fruition on the cover of Sticky Fingers. One of metal's most iconic album covers, Judas Priest's British Steel - depicting a hand emerging from studded leather holding a razor blade - is also one of its most fascinating. How is the hand holding the blade without bleeding? Does this cover capture the moment just before the blood bursts out and covers the blade?

Notes

Everyone knows about The Velvet Underground & Nico cover or the Rolling Stones’ Sticky Fingers, but Warhol actually designed more than 50 album covers over the course of his career.

A few years ago one might have been able to pick up a used copy of some of these albums for a few bucks, but since the publication of Paul Marechal’s 2008 book Andy Warhol: The Record Covers (1949-1987), and the 2009 Warhol Live exhibition—the first ever comprehensive retrospective of Andy Warhol’s album cover artwork—original copies have been known to change hands for thousands of dollars. For the most part (3 out of the 4 albums in each box) have never been reissued on vinyl, and a few have also never been issued on CD, making this box set your only chance to own these Warhols.

The four jazz albums collected in this box all come from that very exciting time in Warhol’s career (1956-1958) when he, in addition to being a successful commercial designer, was also an up and coming fine artist. Through these covers, we can also see the evolution of Warhol’s “blotted ink” style, which would become a hallmark of his later work. The flowers on Johnny Griffin’s The Congregation, on the other hand, are an early example of his Flowers prints of the following decade. The calligraphic writing employed on some of the albums was done by Warhol’s mother. Her distinct handwriting would grace many of her son’s works over the years. Featuring: Artie Shaw "Both Feet In The Groove" , Johnny Griffin "The Congregation" , Moondog "The Story Of Moondog" and Kenny Burrell "Blue Light"
