The Virtuoso Of The Accordion ‎(LP).

Teaching in his own Accordion Institute in Helsinki from 1957 to 1972, Lasse Pihlajamaa had a crucial impact in the professional pedagogy of accordion playing. Due to his work, in 1977 the accordion began being accepted in several major conservatories including the Sibelius Academy in Helsinki. Lasse Pihlajamaa is described as one of the leading figures in modern Finnish (and Nordic) accordion art. Lasse Pihlajamaa passed away 14th November 2007 in Helsinki. During next days the national Finnish TV YLE presents interesting documents from 1975 and 1986.

Virtuoso Accordion was recorded at Kaskerta Church in Turku, and the accordion should have been miked a little closer. The sense of distance in this bright space blankets Luoma's accordion in a resonance reminiscent of the public lavatory used for Weird Al Yankovic's first hit, "My Bologna," and one might be fairly certain this was not what Luoma was shooting for. Moreover, apart from the Zubitsky and Sciarrino works, the pieces on the program are a bit too similar in sound and approach; one craves variety and has a hard time telling one piece from another

Title: The Virtuoso Of The Accordion. A2. –Rimsky-Korsakov. The Flight Of The Bumble-Bee.

Umberto Bogliolo, Alassio.

VIRTUOSO ACCORDION, Mikko Luoma (acc), BRIDGE 9221 (65:38). Finally, the second Tiensuu piece on the disc, Zolo, of 2002. Arguably the most virtuosic work on the album, its uncompromising manner and dramatic excitement seem to sum up the ethos of the entire offering. This is potentially a trifle confusing, but is not a real problem. For the rest, the notes act as a helpful navigation tool in this unfamiliar territory.

This album by the legendary Irish Dutchman is a treasure. His virtuosity on the D melodeon remains, I feel, unmatched. He has had a major influence on players like Joe Derrane, Jerry O’Brien, Philippe Bruneau and Jackie Daly who, I believe, recorded his own version of Fitzmaurice Polka. The CD from Folkways comes with excellent liner notes and I highly recommend it. Kimmel’s art shines through despite the sound quality.
