Recorded just a few months before Hurricane Katrina changed the musical scene in New Orleans both figuratively and literally, the music on this semi-historic album (and accompanying film) is a throwback to a time far before the hurricane's actions

What was New Orleans like before Katrina hit? A: New Orleans was - and still is - a popular destination for tourists, known for its unique cuisine, music and arts, and, of course, Mardi Gras. But it has also been historically wrought with challenges: Public schools were some of the worst in the country; the murder rate was among the highest in the USA; there was deep-seated economic disparity between races; and the city's population had been on a steep decline for nearly a half-century. A: Hurricanes have been hammering New Orleans since the 18th century. Notable storms to hit the region before Katrina include Hurricane Betsy (1965), Camille (1969) and Andrew (1992). Those storms caused death and damages but not the degree of flooding witnessed in post-Katrina New Orleans.

A fine collection of pieces from New Orleans-based (but British-born) clarinetist Sammy Rimington. Rimington follows the sound of George Lewis, the heir to Bunk Johnson's band long ago. The clarinet bobs and weaves a bit among the rest of the band, with a bumping, casual rhythm section and a swinging trombone. New orleans visit: before katrina various new CD. All of the musicians present are masters of their craft, and are well known in the realm of the local New Orleans sound. However, it's fairly traditional music here, looking backward. There's energy, but it's buried in nostalgia in many cases.
