In 1998 the Giants of Jazz label released a 23-track sampler of recordings made between 1926 and 1939 by Jelly Roll Morton, the man who (like . Handy, Tony Jackson, Eubie Blake, James P. Johnson, Luckey Roberts, and Willie "The Lion" Smith) engineered the evolution of ragtime, blues, French quadrilles, and Afro-Caribbean dance rhythms into jazz, that hybrid of hybrids. This is not a chronologically precise survey.
