Jelly Roll Morton, Jelly Roll Morton's Red Hot Peppers. Sidney Bechet, Jelly Roll Morton, Willie (The Lion) Smith. Cuba in America 1939-1962.
April 20, 1926 - December 16, 1939. While the pundits may argue endlessly whether or not this 24-track collection is truly the best of Jelly Roll Morton, it does bring together a large chunk of the landmark recordings made with various units between 1926 and 1939. Starting off with a piano solo version of "King Porter Stomp," the next 16 tracks are all prime-period Red Hot Peppers material with "Sidewalk Blues," "Dead Man Blues," "Someday Sweetheart," "Jungle Blues," and "The Pearls" numbered among the highlights.
Jelly Roll Morton claimed that he invented jazz. While this statement provoked much criticism, Morton is widely considered the first great composer of jazz. Morton's most popular tunes, including the frequently copied "King Porter Stomp," can be found on this album.
Ferdinand Joseph LaMothe (October 20, 1890 – July 10, 1941), known professionally as Jelly Roll Morton, was an American ragtime and early jazz pianist, bandleader and composer who started his career in New Orleans, Louisiana. Widely recognized as a pivotal figure in early jazz, Morton was jazz's first arranger, proving that a genre rooted in improvisation could retain its essential spirit and characteristics when notated.
