Time Will Die and Love Will Bury It is the fifth studio album by English experimental rock band Rolo Tomassi, released on 2 March 2018 by Holy Roar Records. Synthesiser player and vocalist, James Spence had stated in interviews he wanted to make a "clean break" from the "dark, monochromatic" style of their 2015 album Grievances. He said that "I felt like I’d overcome everything that we'd written within that record. For me, it was about moving forwards and taking things to a slightly happier place".
A finite line that's hard to see and it aways moves away from me. I don't want to wait for anything Waste away instead of vanishing Time will die and love will bury it Time will die and love will bury it Aimless strives to try and reach this Will not stir me from this sickness. Stay wondering With this reckoning Watch it go by, just to give in. The rush of waves I'm flooded in the running Drifting with this one constant The wish to change is washed away The outer bounds are out of reach Is it true it's everlasting?
Here is a band that has defied categorisation and expectations for just over 12 years and their new album, Time Will Die and Love Will Bury It, continues to shatter, heal, confuse and dazzle their diverse audience. Given its title, Time Will Die. is a logical successor to the band’s previous album, Grievances, which delved deep into the crevasses of darkened souls and painted a picture of darkness, turmoil and regret. Across the album, Rolo Tomassi illustrates this emotional mannerism about them where they can sound so bracing, so cleansing and yet so destructive at the same time. Over the years they have learned to bind opposing extremities with more cohesion in comparison to their earlier efforts which jaggedly leapt from genre to genre, lacking the finesse their latest album expertly flaunts.
Ten years ago, Rolo Tomassi released their debut album Hysterics. At this point, their exuberant Nintendocore sounded like a fairground falling down a flight of stairs. And landing on another fairground. It was a joyous noise, audibly the work of plucky youths gleefully smashing musical boundaries. What it perhaps didn’t sound like was the beginning of something that would last the distance. Time Will Di. s a hugely satisfying listen, with the longer songs in particular allowing the band free rein to indulge every experimental urge. Contretemps pits Eva Spence’s frenzied vocals against twinkly post-rock guitars and a delightful organ pattern, but ends up a delicate ballad. Alma Mater and Whispers Among Us juxtapose hardcore fury and tech-metal shredding with lush melodic sections.

Although Rolo Tomassi's four previous records are phenomenal in their own right, this album emits a more structured sense of chaos than before. The days of the band's video game-like synth tones living amongst hardcore mayhem are long gone, replaced with a more developed sound and sophisticated energy. Bruisingly heavy, convulsively jazzy, full of dramatic, lurching left-turns and time-signature shifts, the Sheffield five-piece’s frenetic progressive hardcore is capped off by vocalist Eva Spence. whose voice switches from one moment to the next between soft and seraphic and throat-shredding howl.
Rolo Tomassi, from left to right, Eva Spence (vocals), James Spence (vocals, keyboards), Chris Cayford (guitar), Nathan Fairweather (bass) and Tom Pitts (drums) ( ). Three years after the release of their exceptional, career-defining fourth record Grievances, Rolo Tomassi have returned with the most expansive and dynamic album of their career to date. The contrast between the bleak, stark monochrome aspects of Grievances and this new album are obvious from the moment Time Will Die and Love Will Bury It begins. Towards Dawn, the album’s opening track, gradually floats in to focus like ambient digital waves lapping upon a hazy, distant shoreline as delicate vocal harmonies build, intertwine and overlap before seamlessly segueing into Aftermath, a song which James describes as the band’s attempt at a pop song.
Rolo Tomassi have ditched the glitchy, Nintendo-core synth tones from their early days, James Spence’s synth work is now present as an atmospheric layer, similar to Cult Of Luna’s synths, sitting in harmony with Chris Cayford’s guitar playing. Going from strength to strength with each album cycle, Rolo Tomassi have really developed over the past decade and Time Will Die And Love Will Bury It, a beautiful, triumphant and innovative mix of post-rock, hardcore and dream-pop, is undoubtedly their best work yet.
