Drums and Wires is the third studio album by English band XTC, released on 17 August 1979, on the Virgin record label. The album marked the debut of Dave Gregory, who joined the band as lead guitarist following keyboardist Barry Andrews' departure in early 1979. Gregory went on to remain with the group up until 1998, during the recording of Apple Venus Volume 1.

Following Go 2, keyboardist Barry Andrews left XTC and, rather than finding a replacement keyboard player, the band opted to recruit another guitarist (who could also play keyboards), Dave Gregory. The album that followed the lineup change, Drums and Wires, marks a turning point for the band, with a more subdued set of songs that reflect an increasing songwriting proficiency. The aimless energy of the first two albums is focused into a cohesive statement with a distinctive voice that retains their clever humor, quirky wordplay, and decidedly British flavor.

XTC Drums And Wires Virgin Records. Released: August 17, 1979 Producer: Steve Lillywhite Length: 52:32. The album cover got me right away. I had to hear this record. So I bought it without the slightest idea what they would sound like. From that moment on I have been a fanatic of this band. All twelve of their proper studio albums were good. XTC were one of the most influential bands to come out of the so-called new wave that began rearing its ugly head in the UK after the first crescendo of punk had subsided. Andy Partridge and Colin Moulding (the band’s only two constants) were originally joined by Terry Chambers on drums (he quit in 1983 once the band had quit touring) and keyboardist Barry Andrews (whose son, Finn, is in the band The Veils). This line-up made two really good albums together and then Barry departed to go work with Robert Fripp of King Crimson.

The revolutionary Drums And Wires, from 1979, is the second in a series of expanded XTC album reissues, including . Surround mixes, new stereo mixes and High-Resolution stereo mixes of the original material, along with a wealth of extra audio and visual material. All copies come with an exclusive postcard signed by Andy Partridge (while stocks last). XTC, Drums And Wires - 2014 Remix.

Drums and Wires is a must-have for anybody who is only discovering the band. Skylarking and the collected singles are the only other releases that come close to capturing the band's early and earnest dementia. Exclusive discount for Prime members.
