I, Flathead may have been the best of album of 2008. It will certainly have the longest life, as these tracks will hold relevancy for years to come. It's fun, it's amusing, and at the same time tinted with dark edges of reality that time moves forward, things are ever-changing. An irresponsible cad with an eye for young women, a sideshow dwarf, a mechanic out of patience to get paid for his work, a failed songwriter, these are only a few of the characters in this book of verse on life, looking back, and still looking forward. Well, I decided to read the book first to frame the songs when I got to them. I got really wrapped up in the book and looked forward to reading a little bit of it each night, savoring the experience of time traveling back to the era described with its odd scenarios. After a week of reading after work, I almost forgot about the CD that came with the book.

In 1984, Cooder played on two songs on the debut album by Carla Olson & the Textones Midnight Mission – "Carla's Number One is to Survive" and the previously unreleased Bob Dylan song "Clean Cut Kid". Shortly thereafter he was writing and recording the music for the film Blue City and asked the band to appear in the film performing. Cooder's album I, Flathead was released on June 24, 2008. It is the completion of his California trilogy. Based on the drag racing culture of the early 1960s, the album is set on the desert salt flats in southern California. In late 2009, Cooder toured Japan, New Zealand and Australia with Nick Lowe, performing some of Lowe's songs and a selection of Cooder's own material, mainly from the 1970s.
