The End of an Ear is the debut solo album by Soft Machine's Robert Wyatt. The album was recorded in August 1970, while taking a break from Soft Machine (which he would eventually exit the following year). Containing mostly free jazz and experimental music, with no lyrics (only vocal experimentation by Wyatt), it is an unusual album. It includes Soft Machine's Elton Dean on saxophone and Caravan's David Sinclair on organ, who in 1971 would join Wyatt in the group Matching Mole.

Rock Bottom is the second solo album by former Soft Machine drummer Robert Wyatt. It was released on 26 July 1974 by Virgin Records. The album was produced by Pink Floyd's drummer Nick Mason, and was recorded following a 1973 accident which left Wyatt a paraplegic. He enlisted musicians including Ivor Cutler, Hugh Hopper, Richard Sinclair, Laurie Allan, Mike Oldfield and Fred Frith in the recording.

Of all the projects Robert Wyatt created apart from his tenure with Soft Machine and Matching Mole, The End of an Ear has to be the strangest, and among the most beautiful and misunderstood recordings of his career. Recorded near the end of his membership in Soft Machine, End of an Ear finds Wyatt experimenting far more with jazz and avant-garde material than in the environment of his band. Influenced by Miles Davis' electric bands and the fledgling Weather Report who did their first gigs in the . Wyatt opens and closes the album with two readings of Gil Evans' "Las Vegas Tango, Pt.

ROBERT WYATT is a Canterbury Scene, Progressive Rock artist from United Kingdom. While at the hospital, he started to write one of the most personal and intimate album ever "Rock Bottom", realizing that he would never walk again let alone drumming. He also took another approach to songwriting as he also realized that he would never be in a band anymore and therefore would not write songs according to the musicians in the group.

Robert Wyatt's End of an Ear isn't a serious attempt to kick off a solo career - Rock Bottom would play that role four years later - so much as it represents Wyatt letting off a bit of steam. The Soft Machine had just recorded Third, an album on which Wyatt's drumming naturally played an essential role but on which his vocals were limited to one song - his own Moon In June, a composition the rest of the band were so disinterested in he had to perform most of it himself

ROBERT WYATT calls a halt to his musical career " SOME SAD NEWS this month - Robert Wyatt has revealed to Uncut that "after 50 years in the saddle" he won't be making any more music. Wyatt puts the decision down to declining health and a desire not to tarnish his legacy, but he admits he feels "a bit weird" about stopping. I thought, train drivers retire when they're 65, so I will, as well," Wyatt, now 69, tells Uncut. Though he hasn't released a solo album since 2007’s acclaimed Comicopera, Wyatt has remained active with collaborations, most notably on For The Ghosts Within, a 2010 album he made with Ros Stephen and Gilad Atzmon. I've had 50 years in the saddle, I've enjoyed them, and I've enjoyed the stuff I did towards the end, in this century, at least as much as anything I've done before.

This was his first solo album, a series of dedications to colleagues and loved ones, with Wyatt showing off his t chops and (wordless) vocal prowess. However, he had yet to develop the characteristics instantly familiar to solo Wyatt fans from 1974's Rock Bottom onwards: those sidelong takes on pop music; those plaintive, droning keyboards; his emotionally and politically quizzical lyrical style. Genre 60s & 70s. Released 09/17/13. More from Robert Wyatt. Welcome to our United States site. Did you know we also have a United Kingdom store?
