Welcome this fine album by Latvian jazz septet led by Egil Straume, a prominent saxophone player and a respected figure at the Soviet jazz scene. Besides his collaboration with Gunnar Rozenbergs Band and his work with National TV and Radio Band of Latvia, Straume is known as a pioneer of experimental jazz in Latvia.

Dangerous
It's not so surprising that jazz was accepted into Soviet culture before rock was even permitted. I guess it's because most jazz is instrumental, so they didn't have contend with lyric censorship. Egil Straume's Jazz Combo were typical of the "Russian" sound of that era, and "Fiesta" (in spite of the Latin connotations of the title) blended European cultural elements with what sounds like Nucleus influences in a similar way to Arsenal, if a bit more jazz than fusion. Having four winds players (three of them multi-instrumentalists) often makes them brass heavy too, and the organ/piano work bridges Ratledge, Jarrett and Hammer influences. In all, quite a nice one, but more for jazz fans than myself.
