Raising the Rhythms indicates that Asher has absorbed a wide variety of African pop; while parts of this CD remind the listener of exuberant, high-energy styles like soukous and zouk, the haunting "Cobra Call" is mindful of the moodier African pop that has come out of Ethiopia and the Sudan. Citing influences from the Caribbean, America, India, Africa and Middle East, this promises to be an all-round world music album by percussionist James Asher. Our picks include the tracks Tropical Zinge, Spice Souk, Zingawele, and Sunny Side Up. The 10 tracks on this album make for about 52 minutes of music, but some of the pieces are downright cheesy and sound more like elevator music. The opening and closing tracks are good, but many of the rest in between leave a lot to be desired.

The Caribbean, America, India, Africa and Middle East all contribute influences to these richly varied and energetic compositions, whose vibrance is superbly captured in this unique recording. Smouldering layers of percussion form the foundation with a wide array of tablas, dholak, djembe, congas, bongos and bata drums. These are then joined by an exotic selection of voices and melodic instruments including Native American flute, harmonium, sax, trumpet, guitar and a plethora of keyboard sounds.
