This version of Alan Bennett's popular stage play, starring Sir John Gielgud, Alan Bennett and Paul Eddington, is paired with one of his famous monologues starring Patricia Routledge as Margaret.

For Bennett, it was a dream project; for years (decades, actually), he had been balancing the demands of commerciality with his own inclinations toward jazz and affection for the songs of Broadway masters and of the Great American Songbook. Left to himself with a jazz partner, he naturally gravitated toward both interests. The five alternate takes included as bonus tracks on the 2006 reissue of the album are, not surprisingly, more interesting for Evans' different improvisations than for anything else. But they also demonstrate that he and Bennett tried different approaches to the tunes. The album's lead-off track, "Young and Foolish," begins with both Bennett and Evans on the refrain, but the alternate take starts with Evans alone, followed by Bennett singing the song's introductory verse instead; the version runs a minute longer.

But that is the beauty of jazz. These two exceptional musicians came together at the top of their game to record one of the most memorable vocal-piano duets committed to vinyl. Their 1975 recording has now gone digital. Fantasy has dusted off The Tony Bennett, Bill Evans Album and cleaned it up considerably.

Bennett and Jennings met in rehearsal for Untold Stories, an autobiographical double-billNational Theatre. For an actor, playing the role of a still-living figure is tricky at the best of times, but Alex Jennings has been told by Alan Bennett to be nastier when portraying him. Though Jennings described the Yorkshire playwright behind The History Boys and Talking Heads as adorable, he said that Bennett hates being thought of as cosy.

National's commercial output to soar when Alan Bennett double bill opens in March – and an April season still waiting in wings. For the first time ever, the National Theatre will have four productions running simultaneously in the West End from March, when Alan Bennett's autobiographical double bill Hymn and Cocktail Sticks transfers into the Duchess theatre under the title Untold Stories
