Close to the Edge" is a song by the English progressive rock band Yes, featured on their fifth studio album Close to the Edge (1972). The song is over 18 minutes in length and takes up the entire first side of the album. It consists of four movements.

Close to the edge, down by the river Down at the end, round by the corner Seasons will pass you by Now that it's all over and done Called to the seed, right to the sun Now that you find, now that you're whole Seasons will pass you by I get up, I get down I get up, I. get down I get up, I get down I get up. More on Genius. About Close to the Edge. The title track from the album of the same name, considered to be one of the greatest progressive rock songs ever, from one of the greatest progressive rock albums ever

Close to the Edge's title track is a pop song, Yes, one mother of a long one to be sure, but still a pop song for all that. Don't let the 'P' word cause your heckles to rise here, as I mean 'popular music song' and not in any pejorative sense. Bill Bruford has always been one of my favourite drummers and there are on 'Close to the Edge'sections where, in conjunction with Squire's snappy and guttural bass, 'Yes' stray as close as they ever got to within the forbidden outskirts of 'Funkytown'. As accomplished as so much of the music is, I still cannot get my head around the instrumental introduction to this album . that 3 minute freeform Howe dominated squawkfest 'the less than Solid time changes in 3/4' where not content with just trading licks, Yes appear to swap instruments also

To listen to a Yes album is to go on a journey over a landscape which requires some smart gear changes, the pace constantly changing with the terrain. simply beautiful these guys were pioneers, let's remember them. Close to the Edge (the song) is their opus. Musically, the song moves from one attack, rhythm, theme to another smoothly, with great precision, variety, and merit. You can spend time after time listening to the artistry of what each instrument alone is doing: keyboards, bass, guitar, drums, vocals.

Close to the Edge, Yes' fifth studio album - and quite possibly, progressive rock's defining masterwork - was originally released on Sept. Despite its age, the music itself remains timeless. Even though they continued to produce beautiful, challenging, influential music throughout the decades that followed, these forward-thinking Brits set an untouchable precedent during this fertile period, as Close to the Edge makes evident. The biggest reason is the visceral chemistry between the players. Another reason this album remains a touchstone is that it never lapses into the noodling or show-offy antics that plagued so many prog-rock albums during the genre's peak. Instead, Close to the Edge (particularly the four-part, 18-minute title suite) is incredibly nuanced, composed with such masterful flow and economy that every solo or lyric or riff feels connected in a cosmic, over-arching fashion.
